“Better gives me the opportunity to grow and learn from really great and inspiring colleagues while also having fun at work,” is how Carolin Seidel from our DACH team feels about working at Better.

Carolin is the Head of Professional Services in our DACH team, who follows the projects from start to finish and makes sure the processes run smoothly. She is convinced that a mutual understanding of the project aspects, including customer requirements, solution capabilities, deliverables, project stages, etc., is essential for the project to succeed. She studied business administration and engineering, but after moving to Berlin and because she was interested in medical technology, she found herself in digital healthcare. “After more than 10 years in healthcare IT, I still see this sector as an extremely valuable field to work in,” she said. And what was the best advice she got in her career? Read the interview below and find out.

One of the things that I like most about my job is that there is not one typical working day. The range of my tasks is wide, so the days are diverse as each and every day and project are somehow different. So, while I might work on contract documents for one project, I would work on an offer for the second one and do project management tasks for a third one – all in one day. But if I have to describe my tasks and responsibilities in short, it would be to follow the project from start to finish and make sure the process runs smoothly. The corresponding tasks include tender research, working on quotations and RFI / RFP responses, alignments and contractual topics with partner companies, reviewing and processing purchase orders, and the following tasks of project management from an administrative perspective as well.

It is important to me to ensure clear communication with internal and external stakeholders. From my perspective, a mutual understanding of the project aspects, including customer requirements, solution capabilities, deliverables, project stages, etc., is essential.

How did your professional path lead you to digital healthcare? Was that something you envisioned from the beginning, or was it more of a coincidence?

I somehow came to healthcare due to my decision to move to a different city after my studies. My professional career originally did not start in healthcare. During my studies of business administration and engineering I passed through various departments and production sites of a company selling packaging machines and disposables – so this was different but also a great experience that I profited from in the following steps of my career. After having my bachelor’s degree in hand, I moved to Berlin, far away from where I grew up, and had to find a new path for myself. Medical technology was something I grew up with and was always interested in, as my father works in this field as well. So, when I saw a job post from a medical device and software company that opened a new office in Berlin, I took the chance. And now, after more than 10 years in healthcare IT, I still see this sector as an extremely valuable field to work in.

We as a team are extremely glad and proud of last year’s achievements – making great steps forward, especially in Switzerland, to gain light-house projects and increase the awareness of openEHR in the region. Starting the new year with such great projects in the backlog is a very good feeling. And we trust that openEHR will play an even bigger role in the region in the coming years. We just started and are sure there are many additional projects to follow.

While Germany is currently more driven by the thought of sharing data between applications, we see much more innovative approaches in Switzerland. Hospitals and regions are investing a lot of resources and thoughts in reshaping how data is being stored and used in healthcare. OpenEHR as a technology and Better as one of the main openEHR platform vendors play a key role in this process. Helping organisations reduce complexity and enhance scalability, we aim to support the DACH region’s journey towards a more connected, data-driven healthcare ecosystem.

Partners play an extremely important role in our market as they help us participate in projects that go far beyond pure platform technology and ensure a broader range of services for end customers. That’s why one of the major goals will be to build and maintain partnerships with very close relationships based on mutual trust.

We are glad that there are technologies available to stay connected despite the distance. We have virtual meetings every day, not only with the German team colleagues but also with the headquarters in Slovenia and our team in the UK. However, we also do regular team meetings in person, often also in Slovenia, as this definitely strengthens the relationships.

What I enjoy and what helps me recharge is spending time with my family and gardening in silence. Since my daughter was born four years ago, she plays a major role in my free time and makes me forget about work for a while.

I value all the experiences I had during the different stages of my career. However, one main thing that really shaped my perspective was that I worked and still work in an international and diverse environment, getting to know different cultures and great colleagues. I am convinced that the diversity and good usage of individual strengths of people make a company successful.

The best advice I received in my career was that it is crucial to define my personal goals, priorities, and limits. Knowing what is important to me and where I want to be helps me make the right decisions on the journey.

Better gives me the opportunity to grow and learn from really great and inspiring colleagues while also having fun at work. It allows me to contribute to better patient care and to make a meaningful impact.
