Together with Varutis and Better, Klaipeda University Hospital has embarked on a digital transformation journey and started implementing a Hospital Information System (HIS). This is the largest deployment of an openEHR-based solution in Lithuania’s healthcare sector.
The hospital information system, openCare, will support the full range of hospital operations and manage a significant part of clinical information using the openEHR standard. The system will centralise clinical data management and improve the efficiency of processes such as patient registration, treatment planning, test result management, and clinical documentation. It will enable healthcare professionals to make more accurate and timely decisions, enhance patient safety, and streamline workflows across the hospital.
The system’s architecture is built on the Better digital health platform. The low-code development tool Better Studio will allow Klaipeda University Hospital to model and manage clinical workflows independently in openEHR format. This flexibility ensures that the system will remain adaptable and capable of evolving with future technological improvements.
The implementation of the openCare system is being overseen by Varutis, a leading provider of specialised healthcare IT solutions in Lithuania. The company’s expertise in system integration and project management, combined with the openEHR framework, will ensure the successful delivery of the project.
“This technological advancement represents a key step towards the digital future of healthcare in Lithuania,” said Dainius Libikas, Head of the IT and Development Department at Klaipeda University Hospital. “Our priority is to enhance patient safety, improve the quality of care, and increase the accuracy of data across all clinical processes. This system will facilitate efficient information exchange, enabling faster and more accurate decision-making, while also supporting our efforts to integrate with national healthcare systems.”
“We are honoured to collaborate with Klaipeda University Hospital on this groundbreaking project,” said Evaldas Dobravolskas, CEO of Varutis. “This project presents a remarkable opportunity to shape the future of healthcare data management in Lithuania. We are committed to delivering a system that will serve as a foundation for sustained growth and innovation.”
“We are delighted to support Klaipeda University Hospital in their digital transformation journey and to further strengthen our partnership with Varutis,” said Petar Abadžić, International Markets Director at Better. “This project serves as an example of how local expertise can be combined with international standards to create a sustainable and scalable healthcare solution. We are excited to see the impact of openEHR on Lithuania’s healthcare sector and look forward to its continued success.”
The project is part of a broader European Union-funded initiative focused on the exchange and monitoring of medical data. It represents an advancement in Lithuania’s healthcare infrastructure and is the largest deployment of an openEHR-based solution in Lithuania’s healthcare sector. The project is expected to be completed by April 2026.
