Cancer is a life-changing moment that affects not only individuals but also families, carers, and entire communities. To mark this year’s World Cancer Day, Better is releasing a new Oncology Bundle in the Better Marketplace.
Behind every clinical result, treatment plan, and data point, there is a person navigating fear, uncertainty, resilience, pain, hope, and strength, often all at once. Cancer is a long-term condition that impacts physical, mental, social, and economic well-being. Yet traditional cancer care has often focused primarily on biological markers and clinical symptoms, overlooking the wider context in which people live and recover.
This is why the theme of World Cancer Day, People-centred care, is so important. It calls for a fundamental shift in how cancer care is designed and delivered, looking beyond disease and seeing the person before the patient.
People-centred care needs people-centred digital tools
A people-centred approach recognises that high-quality cancer care depends on more than treatment protocols alone. It requires tools that support safe, personalised decisions, enable clinicians to understand functional status and symptom burden, and create space for the patient’s own experience to be heard and acted upon.
Digital health plays a critical role in making this possible when it is designed with clinical workflows and human needs in mind. At Better, people-centred care is a principle that guides how we build digital health solutions. We do it with care, collaboration, and community at its core.
Introducing the Oncology Bundle in the Better Marketplace
To mark this year’s World Cancer Day, Better is releasing a new Oncology Bundle in the Better Marketplace, our growing collection of reusable clinical tools designed to support oncology workflows across different care settings.
The Oncology Bundle brings together tools commonly used in cancer care, including:
- Clinical calculators such as Body Surface Area (BSA), BMI, ideal and adjusted body weight, and creatinine clearance (Cockcroft–Gault), support safe and personalised dosing, renal assessment, and nutritional evaluation.
- Performance status assessments, including ECOG and Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), help clinicians evaluate functional ability, guide treatment decisions, and assess prognosis.
- Patient-reported outcome measures, such as the revised Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS-r), capture how patients are actually feeling — from pain and fatigue to mood and overall well-being.
- Specialised oncology templates, including the FNCLCC Grading System for soft tissue sarcomas, support structured documentation and treatment planning.
Combining clinical precision with insights into functional status and patient experience, these tools support more holistic cancer care.
A living bundle, shaped by collaboration
The Oncology Bundle, like the Better Marketplace itself, is not a finished product, it is a living ecosystem. New tools will be added over time, informed by real-world use, clinical feedback, and collaboration with the wider healthcare and open standards community. This approach reflects our belief that the best digital health solutions are built together and with those delivering and receiving care at the centre.
